Hey, I know pretty much nothing about dps but, if we want to kill faster for achievement:

It might help if we don't use MA on adds for this.  Just have each dps target the closest mob and attack until it dies, rinse wash repeat.

What we gain:
Melee dps moves less far
Nukes will not be wasted as much (mob dies before nuke lands = wasted nuke)
Fast dots will work more for the same reason (more dps)

These 3 things mean more dps - faster kills for achievement

What we lose:
Add Tanks need to live longer

No idea what else we lose - ignorant here.

Yeah, thanks for the reply Scornfire but I guess I don't have too much more to add.  If you can really out dps raid mob regen rates, and keep a relatively maximum amount of damage on the MA mob, what you're saying sounds right.  If not, what I'm saying sounds like it's the way to go.

Hey Scorn, to make my point a bit more clear I'll add:

When I am referring to "maxing out the MA target" I mean to include direct damage, or any other necro tricks as well.  In other words, a necro can either spread his total casting time over multiple mobs (that, as I mentioned are likely regenerating at a very high rate), or the necro can DoT, DD etc just one mob full time as it were, which results in less fighting the regeneration rates of raid mobs.

On the surface it seems at least plausible (if not highly likely), that focusing on one mob results in more realized dps (ie not regerated away dps) than spreading out the casting over multiple mobs.

I'm fairly curious to know the real math here, but I don't think it's something practical to parse.  Given raid mob regeneration. I fancy that I'm right, unless there's something I haven't considered.

There are times when the raid is swirling around the toilet bowl teetering on the verge of going under to the murky sewer.  A mob is running loose, and no tank is on it.  Well, this is your chance to grab agro and play your tank with style.

Any FL tank with fresh discs is a better mitigator than the best tank with no discs - at least until his discs drop.  When a mob is loose, the tank MTO is likely shot and trying to recover.  So I say, feel free to lasso the thug mob that is ravaging our dps and healers.  At this point, YOU are our best defense.  Yes you...

I saw a non boxed tank today standing in the corner shooting arrows while the bosses were ripping people apart.  This is not what your class is about.  You are not dps, you are a tank.  Just step in and be a speed bump if nothing else - you almost surely will save a dps or healer in the process.

The best thing you bring to the table relative to non tanks is mitigation - use it.  Seriously.

I'll post this in all  three tank forums.

When a raid starts to crumble a bit, I notice that I am often fighting someone for agro on a mob pickup.  It's good that people are jumping in to keep us afloat (really good), but we are all wasting each others deflects etc when we don't communicate.  Really try to work on using the tank channel guys, I am convinced that there are borderline raids we lose, simply because 2 tanks cooked their deflects at once.

If you see the raid crumbling, ask in channel if anyone is ready, and if you are ready, SAY "ready if needed or something" in channel.  Just blurt it out, who cares - you might save someones deflect, and maybe even save the raid.

Necromancer / Multiple targets and dots

While playing Scoville, I noticed that his dps was a lot lower than some other necro's dps.  When I sought out why, one thing I learned was that some necros dot multiple targets (basically deviating from MA calls in a big way).  This will increase a necro parse, but it makes me wonder, when raid mobs likely have a high hp regen rate, are necros who do this really doing the smart thing for the raid?

It seems like the more dots you have going the better at a glance, but when raid mob hp regen is factored in, you might be less effective spreading out dots as opposed to maxing out the MA target.

Yes Over ez, I will swap 4 spells at a time. I also have a spell set that I've been playing with that swaps in my 12 sec dots and nukes. It seems to work w/ adds that die very fast, the quick dots and nukes have a little refresh time though.
Basically, on bosses, I try to keep all dots running as they fade, and cast procs and aa etc in between to up my crit chances and anything that will up my base dmg.

Nintap, thanks for your help so far.

Do you really use Shield of consequence (what you listed as cast #3) in every dps cycle?  I see it as only a self buff, not a dps spell - this doesn't make sense to me.

I have read some of this before, what looks like something i need to try is the use of flesh to poison dd proc to initiate the GoDR proc (twincast dot after a dd is cast). Flesh to poison does not proc every time so i may need keep a close eye. I have tried to make a burn line up, but takes long to load, so have stuck with hot keys to swap out 4 at a time. I need to try set up a burn set again.

MY line up is as follows:
1. Soulrend - (life tap)
2. Impose for blood - (DD, chance to proc 30-130% dot dmg increase)
3. Shield of consequence - (% spell and melee mitigation)
4. Call Skeleton Mob - (swarm pets)
5. Chaotic liquifaction - (scent of the nightfall db + chance for liquifaction or pyre of lost or both to land 54sec dots)
6. Mind extraction - (grp mana tap dot)
7. Dark leech - (grp life tap dot)
8. Pyre of jorobb - (30sec dot)
9. Pyre of marnek - (30sec dot)
10. Ignight synapse - (30sec dot)
11. Annihilation - (30sec dot)
12. Swift life draw - (12sec self lifetap dot)
Slots 8-11 get swaped for 42 sec dots
8. Glistenwing venom
9. Plexipharia's pallid haze
10. Binasia venom
11. Plexipharia's grasp (also self life tap)
     Swap for 1min 24sec dots
8. Smoldering shadow
9. Coruscating shadow
10. grip of jabaum or livinaus decay
11. Mortiferious wounds

So I keep them organized in sets; short, medium and long. 12 dots there + 2-3 more that are always available.
Shield of consequence is a new addition to the permanent part of my line up to deal with lich adds with Calix and helps SO much! I make sure i always have it in my buff window, need to learn to make a trigger to alert me when it wears off. Main reason for some of my permanent part of lineup is they are slow to load or are life tap and can assist with proc of RB aa.
I do have a nuke/swift spellset as well for weaker adds.

For crit% I do have a Blightbringer tunic clicky, third spire, hand of death proc. Still need to get my 2.5 epic 10% as opposed to 8% now.

Side note: fighting lanys and calix I have been focusing on lanys cause we cant seem to get her down to calix hp, even w/o putting dots on calix. I dot lanys when can and try to proc my impose for blood dd+30 -130% dot increase off of calix, mainly + mana tap cause peps w/rez need mana.I do dot him but if i load up on calix then sparky spawns at 70%, making it even harder to dmg lanys. I have been having a hard time keeping agro down even with FD. Seems like i can cast 4 dots and agro is getting crazy. Any way to gain more agro from lanys and calix would be awesome for me.

Thanks

I'm not sure I'm following you here Nintap.  Are you saying these are your lineups?

I thought the big picture Mistatk was trying to get at here is whether or not all DPS characters are trying and making improvements IF needed, not the particulars of someone dying at times.  Of course dying will affect dps and we all have cruddy dying nights, but when one character constantly is doing twice the dps of another character in the same class, dying is likely not the crux of the matter  I don't see anyone has having addressed this point really.

I do also play Scoville, and come in low on parses, I see large room for improvement with that character, I hope others look into it as well.
