Brief Event Overview and Strat

Any questions, please ask in the FLRaids:raids channel, and/or reply to this thread.  Thanks.

This raid is a scaled up version of the group mission Illdaera's Vengeance, but with some twists.

The Avatar of Steel starts off invulnerable.

We use the guns on the ledges, to fire at Avatar, which causes adds to spawn.  The adds drop shards, which are used to power the carts, and move the water platform above; causing steam, which makes Avatar vulnerable to the cart explosives.

Avatar is perma-rooted, has various AE's; with related emotes.  Refer to the Text/Audio Trigger section below for details.

At 69% - Adds: a steel pattern - Spawn under/at Avatar - Assigned group(s), ASSIST MA2 and KILL PATTERNS when they spawn.  They do not attack back.  They'll path towards someone and morph into a 16k hitter called "recreation of steel".  Pattern Spawn Trigger Emote = drops a piece of steel from its body

At 33% - Adds: a molten steel mound - Indifferent, stationary spawns from south; incrementally towards the north.  DMG AURA, that GROWS in strength the longer it's alive.  RANGE DPS ONLY - Avoid aura, it will kill you fast!

Assigned Molten Group #7 - Position NORTH SIDE of the hump/aquaduct; adjust your view-angle (3rd person, F9 to toggle), to see OVER the hump and gain Line-of-Sight at moltens in order to range DPS.

Both adds continue to spawn for the duration of the event.

Everyone else, assist MA please when called on.

Shards, Guns, Carts & Tower - Ssark is handling this area.  Assigned players to loot shards, and handle cart/tower moves.

Boss - Avatar of Steel

Hits: 23500
Abilities: AE Rampage
AE:

Rumble of Mountains - PBAE 25k DD (1000' Range)
Steel Absorption - 75k DD (Single-Target)

Bolt Guns

Clickable to fire bolts at the Avatar, which spawn adds.

Guns are located on the ledges, on either side of the spiral ramp, spanning multiple levels.

Water Tower Platform & Catapult

Catapult launches player onto the floating platform.

Shards are used to power/move the platform, over Avatar of Steel.

Water spills onto teh Avatar, making it vulnerable to explosions from the carts.

Shock of steel adds most likely spawn as a result of this action above.

ONLY TWO PEOPLE allowed up in the tower, or 75k AE Steel Absorption will fire.

Carts & Explosives
  • Delegated duty, for selected players.
  • There's a cart located North, and South.
  • Each has explosives on it.  They're powered by the shards.
  • ONLY ONE PERSON on the cart at a time, otherwise 75k DD hits.
AE Entities

Name: a fiery blast
AE: Unknown

Come into play for individuals on the floating platform possibly.  Test/report.

These are potentially attackable/killable, and/or non-confrontational.  Test/report results.

Keep an eye open for these floating around in the sky or something.  They maybe tied to floating tower, and/or just casting AE's at us once and a while.

Avatar of Steel - VULNERABLE STATES: ALL Mandatory setup

Everyone needs to setup these, so you know WHEN to attack/DPS Avatar efficiently.

CASTER Vulnerable state: magical protection crumbles in the massive explosion

Emote Trigger argath-vuln.gtt

Audio Files:

This causes extra spike damage in addition to the regular 60k AE Crushing Swipe.

Make a /rs, /shout, /ooc hotkey to give Paladins/Healers a heads up for SPLASH & CURSE CURE.

Paladins can splash at you and cure from a distance.  A designated healer can act as backup/safety cure.

Brief Event Overview and Strat

Any questions, please ask in the FLRaids:raids channel, and/or reply to this thread.  Thanks.

This raid is a scaled up version of the group mission Illdaera's Vengeance, in Argath.

The Avatar of Steel starts off invulnerable.

We use the guns on the ledges, to fire at Avatar, which causes adds to spawn.  The adds drop shards, which are used to power the carts, and move the water platform above; causing steam, which makes it vulnerable to the cart explosives.

Once Avatar is active, it switches back and forth between invulnerable states.  We have to repeat the carts/tower process each time to make it vulnerable again.

Avatar has directional AE's, with emotes, and is perma-rooted.  Do not attack from the front, avoid South side.  Main Tank, face him EAST, away from the spiral ramp.

Avatar also most likely powers up, as it does in the group mission, based on time.  There are emotes in the group version to indicate this.

Everyone else, assist MA please when called on.  During our learning stages, we'll need everyone on/off adds as they spawn.

CC - Test/Report mez/snare/stuns on adds please.

Shard Looters - Ssark is handling this area.  Assigned players to loot shards, and handle cart/tower moves.

Added:

At 66% - Avatar spawns a steel pattern adds.  They roam around, and if come in contact with a melee player, change into recreation of steel, and hit for 17k+.

At 33% - Avatar spawns a molten steel mound adds.  Indifferent, with DMG AURA, that GROWS in strength the longer it's alive.

Both adds continue to spawn for the duration of the event.

Forgot to add the Card/Explosive sub-section:

Carts & Explosives

  • Delegated duty, for selected players.

  • There's a cart located North, and South.
  • Each has explosives on it.  They're powered by the shards.
  • ONLY ONE PERSON on the cart at a time, otherwise 75k DD hits.
  • Cart moving, spawns adds.

First attempt Thursday, Dec 08-2011:

Three attempts made last night.  Good overall first look at the event.

Cart/Dousing/Shard team worked through the mechanic.  Better handle of it by end of 3rd attempt.

Avatar to 61% on the final attempt.

Everyone must react to 75k AE emote to avoid the damage.  Taking the damage causes extra burden on healers.

Patterns morphing was main culprit at the time for final wipe.  Adjusts in place for next run.

Details below have been amended into the strategy post:

Second attempt Friday, Dec 09-2011:

Several attempts last night, although we got jammed up at pattern stage.  We are learning more.

From observation, I'm not 100% convinced the steel patterns are morphing due to proximity with melee players.  My theory atm is that they're targeting the lowest person on Avatars hatelist, and pathing towards them.  Last night, I watched a pattern path by the MT, it didn't morph at all.  We can test this theory next run.  If it's true, I got a couple tactics in mind to counter it.

The player who morphs a pattern does get a flash emote across their screens (it happened to me).  There's no warning emote I saw in my logs however.

As we test/understand the patterns more, we'll be able to tactically adjust to handle them.  This is the goal of our attempts going forward.

Overall, good attempts last night.  Thanks again for everyone who has taken the time to show up and support our team!

Adjusts:
  • Trigger added for steel pattern spawning (ref GTT section below) Pattern: drops a piece of steel from its body
  • Trigger added for MELEE Vulnerable state: is cooled by the water cascading from the tower
  • Trigger added for CASTER Vulnerable state: magical protection crumbles in the massive explosion
  • Do not send pets/DPS when Avatar is invulnerable.  You're just wasting your mana/endurance, and increase AE exposure.
  • Tower/Cart/Shard adjusts by Ssark to expedite the process, and to reduce fails.
  • Rangers - Bow DMG is OK to use against patterns
  • Pet classes - OK to use against patterns
  • Steel Patterns - Debuff them, and attempt snare/root/CC methods again.  Testers reported no immunity messages, but resists.

At 69% - Adds: a steel pattern - Spawn under/at Avatar - CASTERS & RANGERS & PETS = Assist MA2 and KILL PATTERNS when they spawn.  They do not attack back.  They'll path towards someone and morph into a 16k hitter called "recreation of steel".  Pattern Spawn Trigger Emote = drops a piece of steel from its body

I guess there was some confusion on my part about how this was done tonight.  I had read the strat here in its entirety twice prior to the event tonight, and referenced it again just before we began.  Since I had not done the raid version of this, I wanted to be sure I knew what I was supposed to be doing.  I also read all of the info that was given in /rs prior to the start, and I thought that I understood what it was I was supposed to be doing.  I was in the caster group that was to take out the molten spawns.  As instructed, I helped to take down the shards.  When we finished with the shards, I was on the avatar.  I knew that at 33% I needed to run to the cubby to start nuking the molten spawns.  In the meantime, patterns were dropping and morphing into recreations.  Seeing one coming toward me, I remembered that the strat here said all casters and pets were to nuke them, so I switched to the one coming at me and nuked it.  Immediately after that, a recreation came at me from behind (or perhaps it was a pattern that no one caught that morphed when it got close enough to me) and killed me.  Regardless of whether I had remained on the avatar or switched to the pattern in front of me, that other one would have taken me out.  It was discussed in my group, however, that I should have been on the avatar the entire time after the shards were down until we were to nuke the molten spawns.  So my confusion was, and still is to some degree, which is it?  Was the strat changed from what is given here so that now only certain groups are supposed to kill the patterns while everyone else is on the avatar, or are casters (regardless of their group#) still supposed to switch once the patterns start dropping in order to take them out before they can morph and slaughter a bunch of people?

This is my fault.  Normally I'm on top of adjusting our strats to reflect how we currently do events.   However, I mistakenly overlooked updating the post regarding our most recent adjusts implemented two weeks ago.  Sorry!  /blush.

Specific to the molten adds, there was no change prior to tonight.  It was only during/after the event when G7 pointed out they were all dead and not able to work moltens that it was clear there was a big problem there.  Basically, the adds can reach you guys, and since you're out of sight of tanks; they're unable to see the adds clearly and pick them up.  So for the adjust, we need G7 closer to the raid near the hump to get some line of sight on moltens and apply damage safely while being in LoS of the main raid.

At any rate, it's not your fault, and you did as instructed for both positioning and what/when to attack.  It's appreciated that you took the time to read the strategy post as well.

I'll update the post before our next Argath run to reflect our recent changes, and bring it in line with our molten adjusts from tonight  as well.

The add that I saw come in was brought there with someone, my guess would be someone from my group since we were the only ones that should have been there, and it was already a recreation of steel.  It killed that person and then came straight at me and took me down as well.  I was in a corner, so there was nowhere I could go to get away from it.  If that add hadn't been brought there, it may have been a completely different outcome for my group.

Also, on a semi-related note...is there a reason why we don't face the avatar toward the spiral rather than north?  I did this during the group version and it seemed to help with the AEs, so I was just curious.

I was on cart duty lastnight and it went fairly well (could have been tighter) but I did have trouble with 2 things.

The first was wasted shards, on 2 occasions standing on the cart and clicking the shard nothing happened, it would poof instantly. It was either too soon after Ssark clicked their shard or I clicked it too soon after me jumping on the cart. Either way every time the shard worked I knew it because after clicking it there would be a delay of about 2 seconds before the shard poofed and then the cart would advance.

The other thing I was a bit unclear of is passing shards, I'm sure as long as one looter knows how to do this is itsn't a big issue but I couldn't figure it out withthe brief explination I was given. I am still confused as to what was really going on, was it a trade to pass them using hotkeys or is it a new mechanic I am unaware of that I can just sort of put them in the inventory of the douser?

This is most likely just lag.

Ssark handles carts/tower.  He can adjust the related prep for future runs to be more clear possibly.  The object passing is a relatively new mechanic.  You have to be in the same group for it to work (which is why G2 is always made up that way).  The person targets another player, clicks the shard and it passes to that person.  Unfortunately, like many things in EQ, it's not documented, and left to player discovery.

Only thing I can see here is maybe the person didn't realize an add was on them as they were relocating (they should be playing in 3rd person view to see everything btw).  At any rate, adjusts to the groups position closer to raid will enable tanks to pick the adds up visually easier.

Single-target AEs aside, the others in play are PBAE; not directional.

Casters can avoid the 60k PBAE easily, by just reacting to the warning emote and moving slightly out of range before the AE fires.  Afterwards, the caster moves back into DPS range and resumes their role.

Less seasoned melee who are unable to take the PBAE + some AE rampage rounds should not remain there and adjust their tactic to range dps only.  There's a misconception I believe that some players feel their healer can/should be able to keep them alive regardless of their current gear state.  This is a fallacy, and it's up to the player to take their interim shortcomings into consideration and adjust their play accordingly.

By the way, my comments are not to be interpreted as a diss towards anyone.  These are critiques of play in the realm of EQ derived from observations of players at our raids.  EACH and every player should always self-analyze their play on our raids.

* Note: The remainder of this post briefly covers related raid concepts, player action/inaction and the overall raid impact.

Raid Ops Analysis

Outside of each players responsibility to play their class role; here's a broad overview of what I look for during our events:

Is/are player(s) reacting as tasked?
  • Assisting MA#
  • Reacting to emotes
  • Fulfilling their specific assignment for a key raid mechanic (moving objects, responding to NPCs et al).
  • Covering buffs/debuffs, MGBs for ADPS/etc as assigned.
Root cause(s) of death/wipe
  • Avoidable damage being taken (Spell AE form, melee rampage, standing next to rooted mobs etc,.).
  • Prior failure to react to emote(s); resulting in penalty (both single/raid wide)
  • Gear/AA deficiencies
A couple of reflective focus points from the above list:

EMOTES

Failure to react to a single emote has systemic repercussions for many events we do.  We inform those who fail an emote; not to finger-point, but to ensure they are aware and work through adjusts in their play/setup in order to prevent it from happening again.

AVOIDABLE DAMAGE

Review the events we do, and you'll notice many AEs are completely avoidable.  Reacting to warning emotes, getting cured before a recourse, and occasionally moving behind an object to block an AE entirely.

Short range AEs.  If a player ignores our instructions and stands in the AE; needless damage occurs.  This results in healers diverting their attention away from others taking unavoidable damage.  A simple action of moving beyond a short range AE negates the damage entirely and the individual can maintain their role without being a detriment to the raid as a whole.

Ones raid contribution is zero when they are dead.

Great questions, Jube.

I handle the cart pieces, and for someone's first time, I don't often have the luxury of a lot of time to explain everything about it and set up DPS burns, etc.  So, I often minimize it just to what I definitely need you to do, and the cart part of the raid went very well last night - I was quite impressed in your first go (everyone has some minor issues the first time, you should have seen us trying to figure it out back in January).

If you have any questions during the raid, or right after, don't be afraid to ask right in game or, just like you did in the forums.

I do recall mentioning how the tokens are passed, but not necessarily explaining why and who we pass them to.  (Or I didn't, I'm old and my memory sucks.)  Simply target the person (using F-keys to target a group member), then right click the shard and it passes it to them.

We pass tokens to Rulolin because he's the guy up on the floating tower, so it's pretty tough for him to loot anything from up there.  This makes us very efficient -- we used to have him down below, looting a bunch and then running up, but this way he can start the tower moving nearly right away.

As for the tokens disappearing on the cart, I can tell you how that can happen.  IF you have someone else targeted -- say, a fellow group member -- when you click, even on a cart, you can actually pass the token instead!  Usually this is not a problem for a monk (it would be for a healer!), but I suspect this could have happened to you.

Anyway, thanks for posting and asking.

At 33% - Adds: a molten steel mound - Indifferent, stationary spawns from south; incrementally towards the north.  DMG AURA, that GROWS in strength the longer it's alive.  RANGE DPS ONLY - Avoid aura, it will kill you fast!

Both adds continue to spawn for the duration of the event.

Everyone else, assist MA please when called on.

Shards, Guns, Carts & Tower - Ssark is handling this area.  Assigned players to loot shards, and handle cart/tower moves.

Revised above to be more descriptive and reflect our current tactics:

Denoted >  :) < to this event again; indicating the possibility it'll be something we hit when locked out of our primary targets.  Marking it also makes it known to any newcomers that this is another event with related prep/setup.
