Freelance Ramblings / Happy Canada Day!

http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/01/travel/fake-canadians-canada-day-travel/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

-- The "Canadian Flag" about halfway down is pretty funny -- right idea, wrong leaf.

-- I did not see anything about liking pie, standing in lobbies all day, or calling people out as "amateur hour" in the article.   Maybe those only apply to Halfling Canadians.

-- If I pretend to be a Canuck on raids, will that get me more DKP / better service?  Doubtful but worth a shot, eh?

Freelance Ramblings / Re: TS Help
« on: June 29, 2013, 03:19:18 AM »
Recognize that this thing is not perfect.  I definitely found easier skill up paths (for me anyway) simply by browsing the trivial list and picking a path that made sense.

Certainly though, the various TS guides on EQTraders have been quite helpful.  It all depends on your style and maybe what you already have access to.

Good luck, and feel free to send me a tell if you have any Q's, though there are several people in channel who have been full TS-300's for a long time.

Monk / Re: Monk DPS - Ssark version.
« on: June 23, 2013, 09:25:35 PM »
Just so folks know, this write-up from Oruatyrim sums up the changes very well.  A couple of additional notes:

-- Recently, the devs put Eye of the Storm and Swift Reflexes on the same timer.  Since Eye is more suited to long fights, and Swift can save your tail, go with Swift.  As pointed out by another to me, Swift could be cast long before the fight begins, and the timer could pop in time for Eye or another application of Swift should you be hit.

-- On the subject of the Balances.  Several monks at Monkly Business have pointed out that the older discipline Tiger's Balance uses Tiger Claw attacks.  While these attacks are less damage typically than the newer Eagle's Strike provided by Eagle's Balance, the Two-Finger Wasp Touch AA increases these Tiger Claw attacks and hence, a number of them will use Tiger's Balance over Eagle's Balance even though the former is older.  I haven't parsed out to see which is correct.

-- Long or short, you'll get more out of Crane Stance with Ironfist than in combination with any other discipline, including Terrorpalm.  However, Ironfist is practically useless otherwise compared to the others on its own, lasts a while, and has a longer recast (though recent AAs have improved this at long last).  If the fight is relatively short, and you don't see yourself using Ironfist toward the end, it has been recommended (and I agree) to use Ironfist early, hit a Mash Key with Shadewalker's to get the debuff on the mob, then hit Crane Stance for maximum effect.  Click OFF IronFist and continue on with Heel of Zagali as below.

By the way, with Ironfist going, I have seen double and triple 200k+ Crane hits.  That's a lot of damage in a short amount of time, if you get lucky. :)

Ok.  A few things.
3) During Kilsev there are a number of bags that drop.  They cause a nasty dot.  This dot is cureable. Not certain what it is, but it is not corruption.  Pally Splash AND Reverent Purity cures it.

If by "bags" you mean blobs (aka stationary goo-like mobs), these are penalties for missing emotes on Kilsev (besides any crowd AEs etc).  I believe the max is around 8, always in a particular pattern across the arena floor, and they can be avoided.  Nevertheless, not spawning them and beating the emote is the best way to avoid them. :)

I do not know if it was just the death of DPS, or the mobs increasing in total HP, but I did notice that the "Increase DPS Emote" was more difficult to satisfy as the event wore on.  I suspect that it's a certain % of the boss's HP, not the total damage we do, so we may have to 'step up' our DPS pushes on the later mobs.  Again, it could just be more DPS was dead at that point, but keep this in mind for the next attempt.

Also, if you're a melee DPS or even a secondary tank who needs a little reminder about when to turn off autoattack against the first boss, couple things:

1) When the frightened slave decides to fight or flee, she's about to turn it on, especially if she doesn't run.  If she does run, as Maglor said above, you need to back off soon anyway to let the MT re-establish aggro.

2) Make a trigger "YOU are pierced by thorns!" but turn it on just for this raid.  That's a VERY common damage shield message and it'll drive you nuts otherwise, but if you need it, put it in to remind yourself.

All --

As MA for Group 9, which kills the executioner, I found it useful to create an Audio Trigger for when anyone is on the chopping block, not just me.  I may not always be MA for Group 9, so if you get "voluntold" (aka thanks for stepping up) for that honor, download and use the following trigger:

rof-xorbb1-g9MA.gtt

pattern: is about to be placed on a chopping block
action: executioner spawns soon, target and call assist in group!

Fairly useful for junk buff replacement on raids where that's necessary...

After a few runs at this, we've learned a lot about Shrouding up, DPSing Marnek and the wraiths.  Here is a our current strategy: if you are in G8/G9, please review carefully.

Shrouds

If called to shroud in G8/G9, it is done in a rotation established in FLShrouds:Shrouds.  Watch for controller calls.  To shroud up, drop down into northwest anteroom and stand on pad.  You will get two abilities: Wraith Lure and Marnek's Bane.  The Lure taunts wraiths, and is primarily used by G8.  The Bane ability damages Marnek in skeleton form, and is primarily used by G9.  When you first shroud, add both of these to a hotkey bank and have it ready each time you raid.

The shrouded form lasts for about 2 minutes.  When it runs down to about 20-30s, run to the south anteroom pad to deshroud.  If you do not deshroud when the buff wears off, you die.  We ask you to do this a bit early in case you get rooted or have a hard time finding your way to the south pad.

NO ONE but those called in G8/G9 should ever shroud.  NO ONE but G8/G9 should be near the NW anteroom.

Neither group may DPS on Marnek in human form.  Neither group should attempt to Melee DPS Marnek in skeleton form.  (This was attempted but even with 1M HP he tears through it quickly, and we cannot afford any deaths -- the risk is not worth the benefit.)

If you are one of the 10 shrouders in G8/G9, make a hotkey.  The hotkey should 1) announce in /shout warning the raid that a skeleton is about to be produced 2) inform the shroud channel that you are about to shroud 3) send a /tell to the person after you that they are on deck.  Example:

Code: [Select]
/shout Skeleton INC! (Ssark)
/7 Ssark (G8) is shrouded.  Endotron (G8) is next!
/tell Endotron you're next up once my skeleton dies.

Shrouded Group Roles:

Controller: calls out Group 8 rotation during human phase for Group 8, and watches buffs/orders additional shrouders.  During skeleton phase, reminds shroud groups about # of skeleton adds, watches health of human sacrifices and helps accelerate Marnek health drop if needed.  Preferably a member of Group 9, but not necessarily.  Should not be a healer.

Haster: someone who hastes the shrouded folks once they've entered the form.  Can be anyone in raid, including those not in G8/G9.  Should have members of G8 on ETW (they are on wraiths and need haste more than G9 later).

Healers: 2 people, one in G8 and the other in G9, who keep the shrouders alive when they're not shrouded.  If unable to rez, they must call for rez since bodies may be dragged to north pool, giving us an Animated Corpse and likely wiping us.  They should have opposite group on ETW.  Be aware that when your target is shrouded, your heals are insignificant to the number of hps and damage being done to these folks.

Group 8: Wraiths

During human form:
Group 8 has its own 5-person rotation (all 5 except healer).  Starting at 97% the first person shrouds, a skeleton is spawned.  When skeleton dies, next shrouder goes.  By this time wraith has spawned and two shrouders are beating on it; the controller determines if a third should go or not, depending on DPS.  If wraith dies, current shrouded move to south ring to return to human form; next person in rotation waits until rotation starts again at next 4%.  This continues every 4% until 80% when Marnek goes into skeleton form.

During skeleton form:
Group 8 continually shrouds, one after another, sometimes with all 5 people shrouded.  Their primary focus is always the wraiths, but they are to nuke Marnek whenever possible.  There is no need for controller to announce shrouded; simply watch the skeleton spawned by the person before you, and when it dies, shroud up.

Group 9: Marnek Nukers

During human form:
If able to fade often (bards, monks, etc.) can help on skeletons while Marnek is human.  Otherwise, G9 should wait patiently off to the side, help heal others in G8/G9 if possible, but do not get on Marnek hatelist to avoid dots/root.  Do not shroud while Marnek is in human form.

During skeleton form:
Group 9 has its own 5-person rotation (all 5 except healer).  At around 81%, Group 9 begin their shroud rotation, sometimes with all 5 shrouded at once.  Their primary focus is always on Marnek -- when the Bane button pops, target Marnek and hit it.  They may help on wraiths, but Marnek is the primary focus.  This continues until Marnek reverts back to human form.

LAVA DEATHS:

10k DMG per SECOND in the LAVA.

This is completely avoidable.  IF you end up in the Lava and die, you must reflect on how it happened.  There's two ways:
  • Ground Stage: Zalikor knockback.  Your position in relation to Zalikor determines this.
  • Air Stage: Zalikor randomly targets a platform and part of the AE is a knockback.  React to the triggers to avoid this.

If you're trying to run and cure the Purple Crystal DoT, use care not to panic and run off the edge of the event area! ;)

When you die to Lava, expect leads to ask you how it happened.  We're not doing this to diss you, it's to isolate the errors in play and corrective action needed to prevent it and/or reduce the chances of it happening in the future.

Ssark commentary: If you do fall in, don't panic.  The easiest thing to do (if you don't see a ramp) is to head for the outside wall of the event's room; in many cases, you can inch up the wall and out of the lava.  You can then traverse the wall and find a way to return to the event.  Keep in mind that if this happens during the AIR STAGE, you're not going to be able to return to main event area because of the burning aura.  Best answer, as Furro says, is to avoid it altogether, because while you are navigating we're missing your heals/dps/tankage.

Air Stage

PLATFORMS:

Some ramps are easier to navigate than others.  Use the prep time to orient yourselves with your routes to your assigned platform.  You don't necessarily have to take the direct ramp up that leads to your platform.  We'll explain this further inside during prep for clarity.

Groups be aware of WHERE your assigned platform is.  Please ensure you have the proper map locations installed to help in this area.

The Ground AURA is no joke.  You'll die within a few seconds it goes active.  This is why you want to have a planned escape route.

Ramps and Catwalks have FAKE gaps.  Once you traverse them a few times, it'll become easier and more trusting.

Ssark commentary: Before the event begins: consider familiarizing yourself with a catwalk or ramp, because some of them appear to require you to jump (which is not true).  Be aware though that Zalikor is 'live' and will aggro if you get too close.  Better yet, request (or have someone else like me request) the BG2 group mission -- in it, that room is empty in the beginning, the lava doesn't hurt quite as much, and you can get a better feel for the room.  I know you are all busy, but if you find yourself often having trouble, this really helped me get a good feel for how the room is set up without any risk.

One other thing I will point out: we believe we have FIVE minutes between the time Zalikor goes up in the air until the Death Touch (<Devour> spell) phase begins.  Obviously in a longer event such as this one, every death cripples our chances for success.  The DPS leads will be keeping an eye on our progress and MAY ADJUST A BURN ON THE FLY if it looks like we're going to miss the five minute window.  DPS and ADPS characters should all be joining the DPS channel in order to watch for these adjustments.

  • GTT updated for ice/cold fix.
  • How about mages on magic?  Discuss, I am not an expert at all on int caster boom boom. :)
  • Also, if anyone has evidence of the trigger for the disease/poison island, let me know.  I didn't have time to go check it out.

FREELANCE DEFEATS THE TRIUNE GOD
Open raid team completes Veil of Alaris expansion

We came, we saw... oh wait, looks like someone came again...

But of course, we had to go and DO IT AGAIN the following week, because Kotsukai kept bugging me with the same question over and over.  So here, Kots, is your answer:

It's not "What color panties do you think The Triunity wears?", Kots.  The Triunity goes COMMANDO.
